Quiet Courage

Solo exhibitionIÐNÓReykjavík

August 2026

Quiet Courage is an exhibition about the small, often unseen ways we learn to become ourselves. It began with questions asked anonymously to queer people about what they first felt, what they learned to hide, where they found tenderness, and what they still hope for. Their answers became six stories, and from those stories came the drawings. The exhibition moves through early feeling, self-protection, courage, intimacy, becoming, and hope. It looks at courage not as something loud or heroic, but as something quieter: allowing yourself to be seen, choosing not to disappear, laying down an old fight, or simply continuing. The stories are queer, but the feelings underneath them are familiar. The wish to belong. The fear of being seen. The relief of being understood. The long way back to yourself. And perhaps, eventually, the hope that being yourself will no longer require courage at all.

Story One: On early feeling. 'Before there was a word for it, there was a feeling, and it was true.'
Story Two: On protecting yourself. 'You learn to hide like a language, until the mask becomes the shame it was meant to cover.'
Story Three: On courage. 'The bravest thing you do is rarely seen: the quiet decision, again and again, not to disappear.'
Story Four: On tenderness and intimacy. 'With no map and no blessing, you learn that family can be chosen and love is built, not owed.'
Story Five: On becoming. 'Becoming is not a door you walk through, but the day you stop fighting your own nature.'
Story Six: On hope. 'The quietest hope of all: to become so ordinary that a child never thinks to ask.'
